Monogram Refrigerator Ice Maker Leak Recall — 2022 Models

The GE Monogram refrigerator ice maker recall covers select built-in column and side-by-side refrigerators whose water inlet valve for the ice maker can crack under normal operating pressure, causing water to leak onto the floor and creating slip and fall hazards, as well as potential water damage and mold growth. CPSC and GE Appliances announced this recall in June 2022.

Slow internal water leaks are particularly hazardous because they often go unnoticed until significant water damage has occurred beneath flooring or inside cabinetry. GE Appliances received over 200 reports of water pooling beneath affected units, including several reports of warped hardwood flooring and one reported fall injury attributable to a wet kitchen floor.

Affected models and production dates: The recall covers GE Monogram column refrigerators (model series ZIPS, ZIBS) and 42-inch built-in side-by-side models (ZISS420, ZISS480) manufactured between September 2019 and April 2022. Serial numbers VQ600001–VQ891000 are included. The serial-number label is inside the fresh-food compartment on the upper left wall.

Hazard and symptoms: The cracked water inlet valve may drip intermittently or continuously, with water traveling along the water supply line into the base of the unit and pooling on the floor. Symptoms include unexplained puddles under or in front of the refrigerator, reduced ice production, a hissing sound from the back of the unit, or elevated humidity readings in the kitchen. Mold or mildew odor near the refrigerator base can also indicate an ongoing leak.

  1. Turn off the ice maker using the refrigerator control panel to stop ice production and reduce water demand through the inlet valve.
  2. Shut off the water supply line to the refrigerator at the wall valve.
  3. Dry any standing water immediately to prevent slip hazards and floor damage.
  4. Call GE Appliances at 1-800-626-2005 to confirm your unit is affected and to schedule a free in-home valve replacement.
  5. After repair, inspect the area beneath the refrigerator and inside the base cabinet for signs of mold or water staining.

Urgency level: Moderate-High. While not an immediate fire hazard, ongoing water leakage causes cumulative structural damage and slip risks that should be addressed within the week.
