Monogram Refrigerator Compressor Fire Recall — 2023

The GE Monogram refrigerator compressor recall covers select built-in French door and column refrigerators whose compressor start relay can overheat and catch fire, posing a serious fire hazard in kitchens and connected living spaces. CPSC and GE Appliances announced this recall in February 2023.

Compressor fires in kitchen appliances are among the most dangerous residential fire causes because they can develop rapidly and spread to cabinetry and flooring. GE Appliances received multiple reports of smoking and charring near the compressor compartment, with at least two reports of minor kitchen fires, before initiating this recall.

Affected models and production dates: The recall covers GE Monogram column refrigerators (model series ZIPP and ZIFS) and 48-inch built-in French door units (model series ZWE and ZIS) manufactured between March 2020 and November 2022. Serial numbers in the VF200001–VF981000 range are affected. Check the label on the interior left wall of the fresh-food compartment for model and serial information.

Hazard and symptoms: The compressor start relay—a small component attached to the side of the compressor—can short internally and generate enough heat to ignite the relay plastic housing. Owners may notice a rattle inside the appliance when shaken (a failed relay), a burning plastic smell near the base grille, the refrigerator failing to cool properly, or visible scorch marks inside the mechanical compartment accessed from the kickplate.

  1. Listen for a rattling sound from the base of the unit; if present, the relay may have already failed—stop use immediately.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator or turn off its dedicated circuit breaker.
  3. Call GE Appliances at 1-800-626-2005 to register your unit and confirm recall eligibility.
  4. Schedule a free service visit—a technician will replace the start relay and inspect the compressor at no cost to you.
  5. Do not store the unit in an enclosed space (e.g., a closet or garage) while awaiting repair.

Urgency level: High. Cease operation until the start relay is replaced by a certified GE technician. Do not attempt to remove or replace the relay yourself.
