The GE Monogram microwave door latch recall affects select countertop and built-in microwave models whose door latch assembly can fail, allowing the microwave to operate with the door open and exposing users to microwave energy radiation. CPSC and GE Appliances announced this recall in July 2020.
Federal regulations require microwaves to have two independent door-interlock switches that prevent operation with the door open. A failed latch mechanism can prevent both switches from engaging simultaneously. Exposure to microwave radiation at close range can cause thermal burns, particularly to eyes and skin. GE Appliances received 34 reports of the latch failing, including six reports of the microwave running with the door ajar.
Affected models and production dates: The recall covers GE Monogram built-in microwave ovens (model series ZEB1227, ZEB1240, ZEB1057) manufactured between October 2017 and February 2020. Serial numbers in the range TR700001–TR944000 are included. The model/serial label is on the inside of the door frame.
Hazard and symptoms: A worn or cracked plastic latch hook is the root cause. Symptoms include the door feeling loose when closed, the microwave failing to start despite the door appearing closed, unusual buzzing sounds when attempting to start a cycle with the door not fully latched, or visible cracking on the door latch hook visible through the door window. Do not attempt to force a failing latch to engage.
- Stop using the microwave immediately if the door does not click firmly into the closed position.
- Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet.
- Call GE Appliances at 1-800-626-2005 to report the issue and confirm your model is covered by the recall.
- A GE-authorized technician will replace the door latch assembly and test all interlock switches at no charge.
- Do not attempt to repair or bypass the door latch; only factory-approved parts and procedures ensure proper interlock function.
GE Appliances support is available at 1-800-626-2005 or at geappliances.com/recalls. The CPSC recall is documented at cpsc.gov (search recall #20-091).
Urgency level: High. Operating a microwave with a failed door latch is a radiation-exposure hazard. Unplug the unit and do not use it until the latch is replaced by a certified technician.
