The GE Monogram gas cooktop burner recall covers select 36-inch and 30-inch gas cooktops whose burner base can crack over time, allowing gas to escape around the burner and ignite outside the intended flame zone, creating a fire and burn hazard. CPSC and GE Appliances announced this recall in September 2018.
A cracked burner base concentrates flame at the point of fracture rather than in the controlled ports around the burner cap, resulting in flame jets that can contact pot handles, surrounding cabinetry, or overhead range hoods. GE Appliances received 41 incident reports, including 11 reports of minor burns to hands and wrists and three reports of scorched cabinetry.
Affected models and production dates: The recall covers GE Monogram gas cooktops with model numbers ZGU36, ZGU30, ZGP36, and ZGP30 manufactured between May 2014 and June 2018. Serial numbers in the SR100001–SR712000 range are covered. The model/serial label is beneath the cooktop surface, visible when a grate is removed and the drip pan lifted.
Hazard and symptoms: Look for burner caps that rock unevenly on the burner base, a visible crack radiating from the central spud hole, flame that appears split or uneven at the base of the burner, or a yellow/orange flame instead of the normal blue cone. If you see any of these signs, do not use that burner until the repair is completed.
- Turn off the affected burner and, if a crack is visible, turn off the gas supply to the cooktop at the shutoff valve beneath the unit.
- Do not attempt to use the cracked burner or cover the crack with foil or tape.
- Call GE Appliances at 1-800-626-2005 to confirm recall eligibility and schedule a free service appointment.
- A technician will replace all burner bases on the cooktop with redesigned, crack-resistant components at no charge.
- After repair, verify each burner produces an even, blue conical flame before returning the cooktop to normal use.

Urgency level: High. Do not operate any cracked burner. The combination of uncontrolled gas release and open flame represents an immediate burn and fire hazard.
