Monogram Wall Oven Thermal Limiter Recall — 2017 Models

The GE Monogram wall oven thermal limiter recall covers select 27-inch and 30-inch single and double electric wall ovens where a faulty thermal limiter can fail to interrupt power during an overtemperature event, allowing the oven cavity to exceed safe operating temperatures and creating a fire and burn hazard. CPSC and GE Appliances announced this recall in April 2017.

Thermal limiters are critical safety devices that act as a last-resort protection against runaway heating. When a limiter fails open (rather than tripping to cut power), the oven broil element can remain energized at maximum output indefinitely, potentially igniting food residue, oven liners, or surrounding cabinetry. GE Appliances received 19 reports of oven cavities reaching extreme temperatures, including seven incidents involving minor fires inside the oven cavity.

Affected models and production dates: The recall covers GE Monogram electric wall ovens with model prefixes ZEK and ZET (e.g., ZEK9500SHSS, ZET2SMSS) manufactured between January 2014 and October 2016. The serial-number label is on the oven frame inside the door. Serial numbers in the range SR000001–SR488000 are affected.

Hazard and symptoms: Symptoms of a failing thermal limiter include the oven not cycling off after reaching the set temperature (runs continuously), a burning smell even after the oven is “off,” the oven interior remaining extremely hot long after the cycle ends, or repeated tripping of the kitchen circuit breaker. Self-clean cycle failures or oven control board error codes (F2, F3) may also indicate thermal-limiter involvement.

  1. If the oven feels excessively hot or will not shut off, turn off the dedicated oven circuit breaker immediately.
  2. Do not attempt to use the self-clean cycle until the repair is complete, as this function operates at the highest temperatures and poses the greatest risk of thermal limiter failure.
  3. Call GE Appliances at 1-800-626-2005 to verify your model and serial number and to schedule a free repair visit.
  4. A GE-authorized technician will replace the thermal limiter and inspect the broil element and control board at no charge.
  5. After repair, verify the oven cycles off correctly by setting it to 350°F and confirming the preheat indicator illuminates and the element cycles on and off during the hold phase.

Contact GE Appliances at 1-800-626-2005 or at geappliances.com/recalls. The CPSC recall is at cpsc.gov (search recall #17-089).

Urgency level: High. Avoid using the oven, especially the self-clean function, until the thermal limiter has been replaced by a GE-certified technician.
