The GE Monogram dishwasher heating element recall targets select built-in models where the plastic tub adjacent to the heating element can warp, contact the element, and ignite—creating a fire risk inside the appliance during drying cycles. CPSC and GE Appliances announced this recall in March 2016.
Dishwasher fires that originate in the heating element compartment can spread rapidly through kitchen cabinetry. GE Appliances received 14 reports of the plastic tub melting or catching fire, resulting in property damage to cabinetry and countertops in several homes. Prompt action protects both your family and your home.
Affected models and production dates: The recall covers GE Monogram fully-integrated dishwashers with model numbers ZDT800, ZDT870, and ZDT925 manufactured between January 2013 and August 2015. Serial numbers in the range VS100001–VS622000 are affected. The model/serial label is on the inner door frame, visible when the door is open.
Hazard and symptoms: Over time, thermal cycling can cause the tub floor near the heating element bracket to deform downward. Once contact is made, the element ignites the polypropylene tub material. Warning signs include a strong burning plastic smell during or immediately after the drying cycle, discoloration or warping visible on the tub floor, or a dishwasher that trips its circuit breaker at the end of a cycle.
- Immediately disable the heated-dry feature in the dishwasher settings (select “Air Dry” or “Energy Saver Dry” if available) to reduce risk while awaiting repair.
- Do not leave the dishwasher running unattended.
- Contact GE Appliances at 1-800-626-2005 to confirm recall eligibility by providing your model and serial number.
- Schedule a free in-home repair; a technician will replace the heating element bracket and reinforce the tub floor at no cost.
- Inspect the tub floor visually before each use until the repair is completed.
